Kalutara Afghans was founded in 1972 by my parents Pat and Jenny Blunden, their first Afghans were of Calahorra origin. My personal involvement with Afghan Hounds began in 1977 with the birth of our first homebred Champion and my first show dog Ch Kalutara Marina. She was a highly marked Black/Tan with an unmatched temperament and natural love of the show ring.It is this quality that we strive for in our breeding today. A most important aspect of the Afghan and one that is extremely rare nowadays. Great showdogs are born not made ! Along with this temperament you need soundness overall balance an an abundance of type. In the early Eighties we were fortunate to obtain in the most extraordinary circumstances Ch Calahorra Boccaccio a dog who again had that unique air and confidence,perfectly balanced completely sound he became the foundation of our kennel. Among his children were SBIS Ch Kalutara Haileselassie,an enigmatic black show dog Selassie went on to become a Multi BIS winner Pointscore winner (twice) and with his half sister Ch Kalutara Panache they went on to become the first Owner Bred and handled pair to win BIS and RUBIS at the same show under a breed Specialist. After my son Luke was born we decided to send Axle Aus and Nz Gr Ch Kalutara Guns n Roses to New Zealand to be campaigned by our good friends William Hansen and Alec Gilchrist of Jhanzi Afghans. Axle quickly dominated the show scene there becoming Top Hound and Top Afghan he won 6 Specialties through his career and Sired the Top winning Eng Aus Gr and Nz Gr Ch Rainbow Aladdin of Jhanzi. Wanting to retain the classic shape we got from Boccaccio but with a desire to improve on his movement we used Ch Karakush True Blue on a Selassie daughter Ch Kalutara Black Magic this breeding gave us one of my favourites Ch Kalutara Code Blue who in turn Sired the showgirl supreme Ch Kalutara Slice Of Heaven. Kalutara today is managed by myself and my partner Wayne Harbutt (formerly Firdusi Afghans) Along with showing and breeding I am also a judge licensed for all Hounds,Non Sporting and Terriers I have judged in New Zealand, Sweden, USA, France and Australia.
